IMAGINARY COUNCILS: RAISING diplomacy in another world

In a MUN conference event, there are usually many councils that focus on common world problems such as world hunger or terrorism. Sometimes during registration, you may stumble across a peculiar council that may include its simple introduction that shows an imaginary or strange goal such as in stopping an impending intergalactic war or the council consists of imaginary characters such as wizards and mythical beings. This particular council would fall in the category of imaginary councils.

As implied by its name, imaginary councils are councils made in MUNs to give the participating delegate a sense of what it is like to dive in into a world of fantasy and only by raising diplomacy they may achieve the goal based on the agenda set by the council. Imaginary councils may help to provide a strong educational concept and a quality form of exercise for newcomers in the world of MUN.

The procedures carried out during the conference is similar to normal councils. Delegates acquire knowledge based on the imaginary world that the council was based on. Be cautious of the fantasy universe which that the council is based on to avoid further confusion throughout the whole council.

Instead of countries similar to in normal councils, delegates may be assigned to characters such as mythical beings or enhanced individuals so they may refer to themselves using pronouns, ”I” or ”myself” instead of saying the delegation of ‘insert character name’.

Blocs can also get interesting as in most cases the characters portrayed by the delegates may form according as in the imaginary world that is focused on in the council but in rare cases they may end up in different teams as opposing characters may share the same goal or perspective and end up working together towards the end of the MUN conference.

One benefit of this council is that there is a great likelihood that most of the delegates favor the imaginary world that the council was based on. These “fans” would then be already sharing something in common in which the case is the imaginary universe the council was based on. This may help when delegates would want to socialize with their fellow council members. Delegates are able to get creative during discussions as there may be special factors that come with the imaginary world that the council is based on thus creating many possible ideas that may end up being incorporated into the draft resolution. Joining an imaginary council may turn out to be a fun experience for some, especially when delegates can see others acting out their respective characters or even include references that you may recognise!
